Akron is located in Summit County, Ohio. It is the largest city in Summit County and is the county seat. A city of northeast Ohio south-southeast of Cleveland. Its first rubber factory was established in 1869 by B.F. Goodrich (1841-1888). In the early 20th century Akron was known as "the rubber capital of the world." Population: 212,000.
It is located between Cleveland to the north and Canton to the south. The three metropolitan areas together have a combined population of about 2,900,000, making it the most populous section of the state.
Akron Canton Regional Airport is 15 miles/20 minutes away; Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is 40 miles/60 minutes away; and Akron Fulton Airport (small aircraft only) within city limits. Major Highways serving Akron are Interstates 71, 76, 77 and 271; State Route 8; and the Ohio Turnpike.
Today, Greater Akron is strengthening its position as the prototypical American city. Its economy is driven by research and development, and a growing service sector, while maintaining a higher than average manufacturing base. Total jobs in the Akron MSA have increased during the last three decades. The Akron area's geographic location makes it easily accessible to major retail and manufacturing markets throughout the United States.
Four colleges and universities within the Tri-County area provide a full range of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. The University of Akron and Kent State University are ranked 3rd and 5th respectively in the state in terms of enrollment.
